Swimmer Libby Trickett’s Husband, Luke Trickett, has been the biggest support system who helped her maintain good mental health.
Despite her extraordinary achievements in her swimming career, Libby was struggling with post-natal depression after the birth of her first child in 2015.
She says that consistent care, love, and support from her husband is the key that brought her back to herself.
Even though her marriage suffered during her post-natal depression, Luke has always been there for her.
Born on January 28, 1985, in Townsville, Queensland, Lisbeth Constance Trickett is an Australian retired competitive swimmer who attended Somerville House.
Regarding her professional career, Trickett emerged on the world scene in March 2003 at the Australian Championships.
She was a gold medalist at the 2004 Summer Olympics, the 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2012 Summer Olympics.
In addition to that, the swimmer was the world record holder in the short-course (25m) 100-meter freestyle.
After retiring for the first time in December 2009, Trickett announced her return to swimming in September 2010 and again retired a second time due to a wrist injury in 2013.
Libby’s husband, Luke, is a former national team swimmer from Australia.
He won the 200 breaststrokes in a then championships Record of 2:16:38 at the 2002 Oceania Swimming Championships.
Similarly, he also finished second in the 5 and 100 breaststrokes and was a finalist in the 50m breaststroke at the 2008 Australian Trials.
On 7 April 2007, Luke married Libby among scenes of tight security at Taronga Zoo on Sydney Harbour.
According to sources, the couple entered via a “walking tent” due to the exclusive photo deal that they had with the women’s magazine New Idea.
Later on, they split the profit from the photos between three charities.
The pair announced that they were expecting their first child in March 2015 after suffering a miscarriage in August 2014.
As of 2023, the couple are parents to four children: three daughters and a son.
Libby gave birth to her first-born daughter, Poppy, on August 31, 2015, and their second daughter, Edwina, was born on February 23, 2018.
After that, they had their third daughter, Bronte, and finally, the Trickett family welcomed their baby boy, Alfred Sunny Trickett, on May 17, 2023.
When the couple gave birth to Alfried, Trickett shared the exciting news via Instagram. She wrote, ”The Final little piece to our family puzzle”.
Following the birth of her first child in 2015, Libby found herself struggling with post-natal depression.
“It just goes to show that mental illness looks different on different, and we put on a pretty good facade,” Libby explains. “It can be difficult to share those deep, dark emotions even with those closest to us.”
Having suffered from a miscarriage in August 2014, the arrival of their first child was an auspicious event for the couple until post-natal depression struck Libby.
One of the major triggers was lack of sleep, said Libby in her book.
In these darkest times, Libby’s husband was always there to comfort her in every way possible. With time, he became more sensitive and was able to communicate more clearly in her times of need.
“I think if we have that in our partners and in our friendships and in our families as well, that’s a really effective way of helping each other,” says the Olympian.
